Airport-Kolkata rail link

INAUGURATING TRAIN services on Airport-Dum Dum section in Kolkata.

For the first time in India, an airport gets connected to the city by a rail network directly.

Kolkata's Circular Railway has been extended from Dum Dum Cantonment to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Airport.

The cost of connectivity, totalling 3.8 km of single line electrified section of which 2.8 km is elevated (to avoid the problem of land acquisition in congested city area and to avoid road crossings), is estimated at Rs 87 crore.

The project, for which the land was provided by Jessop, Ordnance Factory and the Airport Authority of India, was executed by Metro Railway on behalf of the Circular Railway, which is part of Eastern Railway.

The project was sanctioned in 2000-01.
