From bulk to box

Before June 2003, there was no full-fledged container terminal at the Visakhapatnam port and a limited number of boxes were handled in inner harbour by using ship's gear. It was mainly a bulk cargo handling port. Not any more.

The J. M. Baxi Group, in partnership with Dubai Port International, commissioned a state-of-the art container terminal at the port on June 23, 2003.

In the past three years, the throughput nearly trebled, the productivity increased (55 moves per hour from eight previously), the turnaround time dropped (from 48-72 hours to six-eight hours) and more container vessels are now calling at the port than before (15-20 vessels a month from six-eight previously). Shipping circles think the terminal has the potential to handle a much a larger volume of traffic.
