REACHING A MILESTONE: Mr P Chidambaram (left), Finance Minister, and Mr N R Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor, Infosys, at the company's silver jubilee celebrations at the Mysore campus on Sunday. - G.R.N. Somashekar
Mysore , July 30 Infosys Technologies has announced that Rs 126 crore would be distributed among its employees on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. "The trustees of Infosys Employees Welfare Trust will distribute a part of the corpus of trust amount Rs 126 crore to its beneficiaries, in commemoration of the silver jubilee celebrations of the company," said the Chairman and Chief Mentor, Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy. Mr Murthy added that the trustees had decided that beneficiaries would get an amount depending on their tenure in the company. This catch in the good news drew a moan from the trainees and freshers who attended the celebrations held here today at the Global Education Centre. The campus sprawls across 2,206,630 sq. ft. and is located in the outskirts of Mysore. It is capable of training 4,500 professionals within 16 weeks. "Standing here, it is difficult to believe we are in India," is how the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram who was invited to speak on the occasion put it.
For better society
In his oration, Mr Murthy reminisced about the many moments of the company's early days and spoke of the pride in being a courageous and principled organisation. "Let the critics of India's economic reforms realise that there is no alternative to creation of jobs to solve the issue of poverty, and that only competing with the global best would leave a better society," he said. Thanking the `extraordinary individuals' whose "high aspirations, dreams, courage and noble objectives" helped the company create 55,000 high-quality, high income jobs and contribute more than $2 billion a year to exports, he said that bigger challenges and rewards lay ahead. Invoking the young employees of Infosys to remember their duty to the country, Mr Chidambaram also continued with the visionary tone of the evening. He felt the dream to convert India into a prosperous country could be realised in the next 25 years. "The country, though it suffered a late start, has caught up with the best in the software industry," he said. Tier 2 cities in northern Karnataka are possible destinations for ITES industries in the future, said the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy, . Gulbarga, Bidar and Raichur conveniently located near Hyderabad, are also attractive destinations, he pointed out. Referring to Mr Murthy's retirement, the Chief Minister said that this would present the government an "opportunity to use the Mr Murthy's services and seek his advice on nurturing the information technology, biotechnology and high-precision engineering (such as nanotechnology) industries in the state". The Vision Group, headed by Mr Murthy will continue to work towards this goal.
