Calcutta HC issues summons to B.K. Birla

The Calcutta High Court has issued summons to Mr B.K. Birla, the octogenarian industrialist, last Friday in the matter of a defamation suit filed by Mr Rajendra Singh Lodha, Chairman of Birla Corporation Ltd.

In the defamation suit, filed in January, Mr Lodha has prayed for Rs 100 crore as defamation charges.

He has alleged that Mr Birla has made defamatory statements to the media since August 2004, when Mr Lodha claimed his stake in the MP Birla Group based on the will of late Priyamvada Birla. Business Line tried to contact Mr Birla at his residence in Kolkata but was told that he was out of town.

Mr N. G. Khaitan of the legal firm Khaitan & Co, who is spearheading the legal battle of behalf of the Birlas, confirmed the development.
