The Hindu Business Line : Nabard gives Rs 138 cr for State's rural infrastructure

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) has sanctioned Rs 137.57 crore to the Kerala Government for taking up rural infrastructure projects.

The amount has been sanctioned from Nabard's Rural Infrastructure Development Fund XII (RIDF XII) for implementing, among other things, 68 rural road projects in all the 14 districts of the State.

The road projects comprise 25 by Public Works Department, 31 by local Self-Government Department, 11 by Forest Department and one by the Tourism Department, according to Mr B.S. Shekhawat, Chief General Manager, Nabard.

The road projects aim at formation, development, widening or improvement of rural roads with a total length of 435.5 kilometres.

The amount sanctioned will also be utilised for 25 rural bridge projects.The Public Works Department will take up 23 projects and two projects will be taken up by the local self-government department. They will be taken up in Alapuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kannur, Kasargod, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Malappuram, Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram and Wayanad districts.

The projects will focus on the construction of new bridges and replacement of existing and damaged ones with a total bridge length of 2,404.5 metres.

PROJECTS

The other projects sanctioned under the RIDF assistance are eight saline water intrusion prevention structures by the Kerala Land Development Corporation in Alapuzha and Kollam districts and 18 soil and water conservation schemes in Ernakulam, Kannur, Kollam, Kasargod, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Palakkad, Malappuram, Pathanamthitta, Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur districts.

The saline water projects are designed to protect 1,235 ha of land from sea water intrusion, while the soil and water conservation projects will benefit 6,920 ha of land with better productivity.
