Database on economy

The article "India should strengthen its database" (Business Line, July 27) was timely. Researches on Indian economy have been faced with the situation where data are either not available or their accuracy is questionable.

For example, the wholesale price index (WPI) figures for aerated water, cotton and terry cotton shirting, periodicals, sheet glass, cast iron spun pipes, copper wire of all types, printing machines, electronic equipments, body manufactured for buses and automobile cables have remained unchanged since April 2004. Though the WPI numbers are used to calculate inflation, the index excludes the service industry, which contributes substantially to GDP.

It is indeed critical to develop a reliable and secure database for the country.
