New Delhi , Aug 2

With an aim to promote marine tourism in the country, the Government is projecting Mumbai, Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Tuticorin and Chennai ports as part of the Indian cruise circuit, apart from streamlining systems and procedures to facilitate seamless travel by tourists.

The Shipping and Road Transport Minister, Mr T.R. Baalu, stated in the Lok Sabha that the Government has taken some steps to promote cruise shipping — which include relaxing cabotage for cruise ships for five years (from December 2003) and providing a rebate of up to 50 per cent on vessel related charges such as berth hire and pilotage.

The Government has also constituted a high-powered committee headed by Mr Baalu to formulate a cruise shipping policy. Some cruise operators have been permitted to offer services as well.

Permission has been granted to Ocean Cruises India Pvt Ltd to operate from Goa to Lakshadweep via Cochin, while Star Cruises has been permitted to operate cruises from Mumbai to Lakshadweep (Kadmat Island) and Mumbai to Goa, he said.
