Troublesome order

K.K. Mustafah

STALEMATE: A trader arranging cardamom at a retail outlet in Kochi. The Spices Board's directive to cardamom auctioneers not to collect anything extra other than the contribution to Cardamom Development Fund and one per cent commission from the growers has led to stoppage of auctions.

The order deprives auctioneers from collecting Rs 1.50 a kg they spend on cleaning and grading before selling cardamom to buyers. At least 90 per cent of the cardamom produced in the country is sold through auctions at Bodinayakanur, Tevaram, Cumbum, Virudhunagar and Kumily.
