Mangalore , Aug. 2

The Karnataka Government has imposed a uniform ban on deep-sea fishing till August 15. This follows an order by the Supreme Court to impose uniform ban on fishing along the west coast.

A notification said here that the Government has prohibited the operation of all mechanised boats, trawlers, and traditional crafts (fitted with an inboard or outboard motor of capacity above 10 HP for fishing in Karnataka coast from June 10 to August 15 every year. The fishing vessels and fishermen, who violate the above orders, will be liable for penalties as prescribed. They will also become ineligible for getting the benefits of the sales tax exemption for diesel for one year.

Fishery conservation

The notification said that the Karnataka Government is convinced of the need to conserve fishery wealth and thereby protect the interests of persons engaged in fishing. It is necessary to regulate fishing on a scientific basis and maintain law and order situation offshore. There is also a need to avoid the loss of lives of fishermen and their properties due to accidents in squally weather conditions, the notification said.

Before the implementation of the Supreme Court order on fishing ban, the ban periods varied in three coastal districts of Karnataka. While it was a 57-day deep-sea fishing ban from June 15 to August 10 in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, the ban period was 45 days (June 15 to July 29) in Uttara Kannada district.
