Aims at Rs 400-cr pump exports in 5 years, 25% growth in domestic market share

Coimbatore , Aug 2

The Coimbatore Industrial Infrastructure Association (Coindia) is confident of achieving the objectives of the cluster development projects being implemented in Coimbatore, including the annual export of pumps worth Rs 400 crore in the next five years and a 25 per cent growth in the domestic market share.

Coindia, which has spent about Rs 21 crore out of the project cost of about Rs 66 crore since the commencement of the works in May 2005, aims to complete the pump, motor and foundry cluster project by June.

The project will be implemented under the industrial infrastructure upgradation scheme of the Union Government.

Foundry complex

Mr G. Rajendran, President, Coindia and former President of the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers' Association (Siema), in a statement said a foundry complex, which was coming up on a 102-acre site at Arasur, would benefit 110 small and tiny units. At Kallapalayam, a foundry complex was being established to benefit 30 small foundry units.

Another foundry complex at Manickampalayam would benefit about 50 small and tiny foundry and industrial units. Infrastructure works such as laying of roads, construction of buildings and meeting halls were under various stages of completion. He said as part of efforts to upgrade testing facilities, equipment worth Rs 3 crore had been installed at the SiTarc laboratory.

The product die and mould centre at the Coindia complex on Avarampalayam road was being established at an investment of Rs 4.18 crore.

The centre would cater to the requirements of the pump and engineering units in the region and plans were under way to rope in the CII Quality Institute at Bangalore and other engineering training institutes to provide on-the-job training.

Testing labs

Mr Rajendran said with a view to helping small and tiny foundry units, separate raw material testing labs had been proposed at the three foundry industrial complexes that would have facilities such as weigh bridges, meeting halls and crèches.

The Coindia President was confident of achieving the planned objectives of cluster development project — increasing the annual castings exports to Rs 200 crore, 25 per cent growth in domestic market share and an annual export of Rs 400 crore worth pumps and reducing the sand process cost up to 25 per cent in the next five years.
