Chennai , Aug 2

Theatre buffs in the city are in for a treat, with plays and workshops to be held for 11 days from August 4 as part of the second edition of The Hindu MetroPlus Theatre Festival. The festival opens with A Very British Affair by the Escape Theatre, Singapore, adding an international flavour to the show.

Mr V. Kalidas, Vice-President (Advertising), The Hindu, said that The Hindu MetroPlus Theatre Festival is aimed at bringing the best of English theatre, from the city and from other parts of the country, to the Chennai audience.

New plays

The festival will showcase nine different plays and workshops to encourage youngsters to interact with theatre professionals.

Three of the plays will be by groups from Chennai, two from Mumbai and one each from Singapore, Kolkata, Bangalore and Delhi. All the groups are performing at the festival on invitation.

The Chennai-based theatre groups would stage only new plays at the festival; the outstation groups would stage plays that have not been performed in the city before. Mr Kalidas said that as part of the festival, workshops on the various aspects of theatre would be held on August 7-8 for those interested in theatre as a career option.

Workshops would be held, on a first-come first-served basis, on voice, body language, acting, movement, choreography, music, dance, lights, sound and sets, for about 100 people each.

Tickets will be available at the venue and all Landmark outlets and are priced at Rs 500, Rs 250 and Rs 100. Tickets would also be available online at www.thehindu.com/theatrefest. Mr P. Swaminathan, CEO (Tamil Nadu), Bharti Airtel Ltd, said that Airtel would run an SMS review competition. Participants can send play reviews to 6397. The best review would be awarded Rs 1,000.
