`Make him a Minister'

The CPI member of Lok Sabha, Gurudas Dasgupta, is unsparing in his criticism, irrespective of whether his party is supporting the ruling coalition or opposing it. During a recent discussion in the House on outsourcing of some bank functions, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram thanked the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Finance, a prominent BJP leader, for his "cooperation and understanding". Dasgupta, who had made a forceful intervention earlier against the Government move, was quick on his feet to imply that everything seems to have been settled between the ruling party and the main Opposition and others had no role to play. At this, Chidambaram graciously offered Dasgupta the position of the Chairman of the Standing Committee but added that it was for the Speaker to decide.

Not the one to let go, the Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, first smiled and then said: "Make him a Minister, then you will realise... "
