Opinion - Letters
Child labour

This is with reference to "Welcome reprieve" (Business Line, August 3): The Government's decision to ban employing children in catering joints and as domestic help is welcome. The nation's future lies in providing every child the opportunity to study.

It is hoped that the rehabilitation scheme for children who are rescued from the present places of work meets their education and health requirements.

As pointed out it may affect the income of the parents. So attention needs to be given to solve the basic problems.

For example, a poor family in Kerala will not send a child for domestic help; this, however, is not the case everywhere. So education is necessary to bring about an attitudinal change.

Technology and media should be used to achieve this.

Steps should be taken to ensure quality education in every village. Mid-day meal scheme is a powerful weapon against drop-outs.
