Trade & Labour Unions Vizag port workers plan protest week from Aug 7 Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Aug. 4 Workers of the Visakhapatnam Dock Labour Board and Cargo Handling Workers' Pool, owing allegiance to the Visakhapatnam Harbour and Port Workers' Union, have decided to observe a protest week from Monday. Mr V.V. Rama Rao, the union president, said at a press meet here on Thursday evening that 90 per cent of the workers were with his union, affiliated to the AITUC and to the Port, Dock and Waterfront Workers' Federation of India. The workers would observe mass hunger strike near the Dock Labour Board office from 6 a.m. till August 12. He said their demands were merger of the DLB with the Visakhapatnam Port Trust in accordance with an earlier agreement, filling up of vacant posts, decasualising certain categories such as gear boys and line pickers and keeping in abeyance the recommendations of the National Industrial Tribunal. He said the award given by the tribunal on Manning Scale was unrealistic and a "death blow to the dock worker system." He said the tribunal award, if implemented, would bring down drastically the number of workers and affect the employment opportunities of thousands of people. Mr Rama Rao alleged that the recommendations were intended to pave the way for privatisation of port operations.
