Letters Organic farming
This is with reference to "Agrarian Distress: Time for a holistic policy response" (Business Line, August 2): The concluding remark of the author that there is an "... urgent need to reduce the dependence on external inputs and greater reliance on organic farming in order to make farming systems sustainable," is fitting. Unless farmers take up organic farming, no amount of credit facilities and subsidies from the banks and the government respectively will help. The author has also rightly highlighted the indebtedness of farmers in Punjab. The Green Revolution gave farmers a commercial orientation and increased their dependence on chemical inputs. Now the results are there for everybody to see; it is only appropriate to learn from mistakes. Several farmers have switched to organic farming having understood that continuous use of chemical inputs is not financially viable and technically feasible. R. Chandrasekhar Sakleshpur
