45 SEZ proposals formally cleared

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug 8

The board of approval for establishing special economic zones (SEZs) today gave formal clearance to 45 of 169 proposals, including pending ones, that came up before it.

Though officials were tight-lipped about the formal clearance - the Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mr Kamal Nath, will formally approve before official announcement - Government sources told Business Line that with 105 SEZs having been already cleared, the total number of such SEZs is 150.

A Group of Ministers had earlier recommended that the number of SEZs to be notified in the country should not exceed 150.

The sources said that several formalities lie between formal clearance and final notification, including land clearance for approved projects.
