Railways Industry & Economy - Natural Calamities East Coast Rly restores 2 major freight routes Our Bureau
Kolkata , Aug. 9 Normal freight movement has been restored on two major freight loading railway routes - Kottavalasa-Kirandul (K-K) line and Koraput-Rayagada (K-R) line, under the East Coast Railway (EcoR), according to ECoR sources. The freight movement was suspended last week on these routes as the lines were blocked by landslides caused by heavy rains in large parts of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. Also, there were breaches at several points on the routes as a sequel to the rains. As soon as the intensity of the rains subsided, relief trains were pressed into operation to rehabilitate the damaged tracks and repair the breaches. The K-K line being an electrified route, the overhead connections at several places were also snapped by the falling of boulders from the hills. The K-R line, on other hand, being dieselised, faced no such problem. The 446-km-long K-K line, which is a single line section, is spread over three States - Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The terrain is arduous with gradients up to 1:60 and a large number of reverse sharp curves up to eight degrees for a stretch of 60 km. There are 1,271 bridges and 58 tunnels in this section and the highest point in the broad gauge is situated at an altitude of 997.6 metre at Similiguda station. The 164-km-long K-R line was opened for movement of freight traffic in December 1995, mainly to benefit National Aluminium Company, whose refinery is located at Damonjodi and the smelters at Angul. The line also provided an alternative route for the movement of iron ore from Bailadila mines to the steel plant and port in Visakhapatnam.
