`TechTop' winners to be announced on Saturday

Thiruvananthapuram , Aug 9

Winners of the TechTop 2006, a nationwide multidisciplinary engineering contest for the engineering student community, will be selected on Saturday from an array of 10 projects that have made it to the final list.

In what is claimed to be the first format of its kind, the contest offers these young innovators an opportunity to present their projects in front of the public and get some visibility even as an expert panel vets them.

Instituted by `Executive Knowledge Lines' magazine, working in the field of science and technology, the contest seeks to challenge young professional brains in creation of products that would seek solutions to current technological problems.

The organisers offer to help winners to patent innovations and find suitable promoters for commercialising them.

The contest aims at synchronising innovative ideas from various streams with those from engineering and consolidating them into a working model. But `full software' innovations have not been considered.

Supporting `Executive Knowledge Lines' in the effort are the Kerala State Council for Science and Technology, IEEE (Kerala Section), The Institution of Engineers (India) and AimInsights, which specialises in HRD. The US-based Degree Controls, which specialises in thermal cooling solutions, has sponsored the contest.

After two rounds of elimination, 10 projects have made it to the finals. These will be demonstrated to the public at the Institution of Engineers Hall on Friday. The Minister for Industries, Mr Elamaram Kareem, will inaugurate the proceedings.

The winner will be selected by a group of experts drawn from various sections of industry and society.

The finalist will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, instituted by Degree Controls. The prize money will be split as 75 per cent for team members and 25 per cent for the guide.
