The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, will on Friday visit the relief camp for flood-affected people in Nanded district of Maharashtra. He will fly in from Hyderabad for the visit.

Meanwhile, the situation in the pilgrim town of Pandharpur remains critical while it has improved marginally in the worst hit Nanded district, said Mr B.P. Pandey, Principal Secretary, Relief and Rehabilitation, Maharashtra Government.

Mr Pandey said that timely help from the armed forces had helped avert large-scale human losses. More than 2,500 tonnes of rice and 2,500 tonnes of jowar are being distributed to the flood-affected people, he said.

The Maharashtra Government spokesperson, Ms Manisha Patankar Mahiskar, said that deaths due to floods had risen from 118 to 144 in the past 24 hours with 87 people still missing.
