Announces 10th edition of JK Tyre racing championships

New Delhi , Aug. 10

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote motor sports in the country, J.K. Industries (JKI) on Thursday launched `formula tyres' for the Indian market. The launch of these tyres is also aimed at providing a level-playing field to top-notch Indian racing talent like Narain Kartikeyan.

The first set of the JK formula tyres have been fitted to the three different types of formula cars built by Mr B. Vijayakumar, Managing Director of L.G. Balakrishna & Bros, with the engines supplied by Maruti Udyog, General Motors and Hyundai Motors. The three formula machines are called Formula-LGB-Swift, Formula-Rolon-Chevrolet and Formula-LGB-Hyundai.

"So far the tyres used for racing in India were not up to international standards. With the launch of our formula tyres, drivers like Narain Kartikeyan can get good quality tyres for racing in India at much lower cost," Mr Raghupati Singhania, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of JKI, told Business Line after the launch of JK Formula tyres in the Capital today.

Mr Singhania also announced the 10th edition of the JK Tyre National Racing Championships, which will kick off in Coimbatore on August 19.

The three auto majors — Maruti Udyog, Hyundai Motors and General Motors — affirmed their support for promoting motor sports in the country.

Admitting that they have been late entrants in motor sport promotion in the country, both Hyundai and General Motor representatives said that going forward they would be more active on this front.

Over the years, JK Tyre has pumped in investments of more than Rs 40 crore to build infrastructure to promote and support motor sports, company officials said.
