Shipping China's ports post 22 % growth
According to a Xinhua report, during first half of 2006, China's major sea and river ports together handled over 42 million TEUs posting a growth of more than 22 per cent. In terms of tonnage, the volume at 2.2 billion tonnes registered a growth of 18.4 per cent. The seaports handled the bulk of the volume, an estimated 1.64 billion tonnes, posting a growth of 17.6 per cent. The container throughput of the seaports at 39.3 million TEUs showed a growth of 21.4 per cent. The container throughput of the river ports was 2.83 million TEUs, up by 39.3 per cent over the same period last year while the cargo volume of the river ports at 555.33 million tonnes posted a growth of 20.9 per cent. Shanghai port handled the highest volume of cargo up 11.6 per cent to 227.12 million tonnes and container throughput up 17.5 per cent to 10 million TEUs. By comparison, the port of Rotterdam, Europe's biggest port, handled 186 million tonnes of cargo in the first half of 2006, up 1.1 per cent, and 4.7 million TEUs, up two per cent.
