Electronic monitoring of panchayat funds

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug. 13

The Government plans to use electronic tracking mechanism to monitor the funds being provided to Panchayats. "We are putting in place an electronic tagging and tracking mechanism to effectively monitor funds given to panchayats from the Centre," the Union Panchayati Raj Minister, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, told reporters here.

Launching the Rs 5,000-crore Backward Regions Grant Fund (BRGF) to be provided to 250 select backward districts across the country, he said the new electronic mechanism would help minimise corruption and strengthen the Panchayati Raj institutions.

However, he made it clear that all Central funds to village panchayats have to be routed through the State Consolidated Fund and nodal banks.
