Monsoon likely to weaken

Vinson Kurian

May benefit N-E, TN

Thiruvananthapuram , Aug. 14

There are now early indications that the monsoon might go into a weak phase from September 20, judged solely from forecasts available till that date.

The trend could be confirmed only after the outlook for the period after this cut-off date emerges, said Dr Akhilesh Gupta of the Department of Science and Technology.

Monsoon could not go into the customary lull at a more opportune time, Dr Gupta said, since this would mean the lifting of a virtual curtain of rain over Central India, where a surplus monsoon run has held this far with no parallel in recent history.

But a more significant outcome would be the benefits accruing to North India and the chronically rain-deficit regions of Northeast India and Tamil Nadu. Parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh also would get covered by rain in this manner.

Dr Gupta said a weakening monsoon drags the rain-driving monsoon trough to the foothills of the Himalayas, with the rain belt in tow. This causes the ensuing wet session to get confined largely to the eastern flanks of the country.

The trough would get back to its normal southerly position with the formation of the next monsoon `low' in the Bay of Bengal. In this context, Dr Gupta said the forecast for possible `low' by August 18 was withdrawn.
