Amara Raja Batteries plans capacity expansion

Amara Raja Batteries plans to invest of Rs 88.20 crore to increase automotive battery capacity by 50 per cent from 3.6 million units per annum to 5.4 million.
The expansion is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2007-08.
After expansion, the company would have more than trebled capacity since January 2005.
"The current expansion to 5.4 million units would be the single largest investment made in the automotive battery business by the company," the company said in an announcement to the stock exchanges today.
In January 2005, the company announced a plan to raise capacity from 1.5 million units to 2.4 million at a cost of Rs 11.60 crore.
Later that year, it announced the next phase of expansion from 2.4 million units to three million at a cost of Rs 38 crore.
In April this year, the company announced a plan to raise its capacity of automotive batteries from three million units to 3.6 million at a cost of Rs 16.40 crore.
