Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, Aug. 15

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (Visakhapatnam Steel Plant) is committed to promoting industrialisation in the Visakhapatnam district and improve employment opportunities for the youth by setting up a steel-specific special economic zone, according to the Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Y. Sivasagara Rao. At the Independence Day function in the plant, he unfurled the national flag and said the steel plant was planning to persuade the user industries to set up units in the proposed SEZ.

It would also promote ancillary and downstream units.

He exhorted the employees to strive hard and enable the completion of the expansion project, taken up at a cost of Rs 8,600 crore, in the scheduled three years' time. The capacity of the plant would be doubled from the present 3.2 million tonnes. Mr Sivasagara Rao also said the proposal to set up an IIT at Ukkunagaram was being vigorously pursued.
