Karnataka CM announces new housing scheme for poor

Govt envisages creation of Greater Bangalore

Bangalore , Aug. 15

The Chief Minister, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy, has announced a `golden housing' scheme to provide houses for the poor and a `Suvarna Gramodaya' scheme for the development of villages. The Government is also envisaging the creation of a Greater Bangalore by merging the areas of seven city municipal councils and a town municipal council with the City Corporation for overall development.

Golden housing scheme

In his Independence Day address at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground here, Mr Kumaraswamy said under the golden housing scheme, which will mark the golden jubilee celebrations of the reorganisation of the State, 50,000 houses would be constructed.

One thousand houses and a commercial complex will be built in each district headquarters and 500 houses in each taluk. Also, a mega shopping mall and a convention centre will come up in Yelahanka and Suryanagar colonies.

The Chief Minister said the Suvarna Gramodaya scheme, at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore, would be launched on Karnataka Rajosthava Day. Under this scheme, 1,000 villages will be developed as `suvarna gramas' by providing basic amenities and a clean environment and by improving agriculture, horticulture, industrial and cultural activities.

Mr Kumaraswamy also said that survey work has begun for setting up five satellite towns in Bidadi, Ramangara, Sathnur, Solur and Nandagudi. Around 50,000 sites will be developed over 500 acres by the Bangalore Development Authority and allotted to socially and economically backward families, he said.

A scheme to provide houses to 30,000 slum dwellers will also be launched soon.

Investors' meet

To woo investments intothe State, investors' meets will be held,he added. Also on the cards is a new reservation policy.

For the promotion of arts and crafts, artisan townships will be set up at Naragund in Dharwad district, Ramadurga in Belgaum district and Hoovina Hadagali in Bellary district, said Mr Kumaraswamy.

The Chief Minister announced that the Government would increase the monthly pension to freedom fighters.

The State also released 309 prisoners on the occasion of the Independence Day.
