Bangalore's infrastructure

This is with reference to "The PM urged to allot Rs 500 cr for Bangalore infrastructure" (Business Line, August 16): Though flyovers in Bangalore can solve some problems, they are certainly not panacea for traffic congestion. The additional flyovers will serve only a limited purpose.

Expressways above the existing roads, criss-crossing the city could be an alternative. As in cities around the world, expressways of either six or eight lanes connecting ends of the city, with provisions for interconnections could reduce congestion.

The problem with Bangalore is its haphazard development. Though the ring roads provide some relief, they are not express highways and, therefore, commuters end up wasting time on it. Elevated expressways will facilitate movement from east to west and north to south, and allow faster interchanges (say from Hosur road to Kengeri or from Tumkur to Yelahanka), relieving other roads of local traffic.

Also, the development of mass transit facilities, such as the Metro, should be expedited.
