Hyderabad , Aug. 16 The sugar sector in Andhra Pradesh will get a major boost in the next few months with the State Government going ahead with the Rs 266-crore plan for expansion and modernisation of seven factories. The seven co-operative factories are in Chodavaram, Etikoppaka, Thandava, Bimasinghi, Anakapalli, Tenali, Kovur and Renigunta.
Funding
The State has submitted proposals to National Cooperative Development Corporation and Sugar Development Fund that were likely to contribute Rs 122.74 crore and Rs 117.50 crore respectively. The State would contribute Rs 26.70 crore. "It will take three to six months before getting the funds," Dr J. Geeta Reddy, Minister for Major Industries, Sugar and Tourism, said.
Scope for growth
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, she said there was great scope for development of sugar industry in the State. The funds would be utilised to modernise, expand and tap co-generation. Post expansion and modernisation, the capacity of the seven factories would go up from 13,450 tcd (tonnes crushed a day) to 18,900 tcd. The co-generation capacity too would rise to 58.65 MW from 6.15 MW from these seven factories. Dr Geeta Reddy said the Government's decision to revive the co-operative sugar sector yielded good results and helped record a turn around. "They registered a profit of Rs 31.26 crore," she said. Stating that the present wage structure expired in 2002, the Minister said it was agreed to constitute a committee for wage revision.
