AFTER THE RAINS: A farmer preparing his field to plant paddy on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. Sowing of paddy is expected to begin in some of the areas in eastern India after rains have abated. With rice prices rising despite over 91 million tonnes production last year, growers are encouraged to go in for sowing paddy again. According to the Agriculture Ministry, the area under paddy is up by nearly 12 lakh hecatares (lh) at 192 lh during the current kharif compared with the same period a year ago.
