The challenges include inadequacy of educational infrastructure and research facilities.

Hyderabad , Aug. 17

The Chairman of Board of Governors of IIT (Delhi), Prof. V.S. Ramamurthy, has stressed the need for focussing on sector-specific research and development and creation of a common platform for social scientists, scientists, technologists and administrators to discuss relevant issues.

Addressing an ASCI (Administrative Staff College of India) workshop on `Issues before the National Knowledge Commission' here on Thursday, he said the challenges included inadequacy of educational infrastructure and research facilities.

Dr P.M. Bhargava, Vice-Chairman, Knowledge Commission, said the main aim of the commission was generating new knowledge that would make India a leader.

Dissemination of knowledge to all sectors and utilisation of knowledge, including traditional knowledge, were the other important objectives.

The idea was to build excellence in the educational system to meet the knowledge challenges of the 21st century and increase the country's competitive advantage in various fields of knowledge.

It also envisaged promotion of knowledge creation in science and technology laboratories, besides encouraging knowledge applications in agriculture and industry.
