Regulatory Bodies & Rulings Industry & Economy - Radio/TV Cable operators for upward revision in CAS tariff Our Bureau
New Delhi , Aug. 17 The six stakeholders who have responded to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on the issue of the tariff ceiling that should be charged for basic service tier in the conditional access system (CAS) areas have called for an upward revision in tariff to be charged. However, there is no unanimity among stakeholders on what price should be charged for CAS. The system is to become operational in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata from January 1. The Delhi-based Cable Operators United Front has said the tariff should not be less than Rs 150 per month in order to facilitate the implementation of CAS. "A price below Rs 180 per month would result in deficiency in quality of service for the customer and non-conformity to provision of CAS," the National Cable & Telecommunications Association has said. The Mumbai-based Hathway Cable and Datacom Private Ltd has requested the price of basic service tier be fixed at Rs 100 (excluding taxes) for a minimum of 30 channels. Currently, a charge of Rs 77 per month exclusive of taxes is applicable for a minimum of 30 free-to-air channels.
