Shipping Ports on `course'
Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has identified three ports Kolkata, Mumbai and Kochi for case studies on strategic management. These studies are likely to be incorporated in IIM-A's curriculum on strategic management, it is learnt. The focus of the studies will vary from one port to another. For example, for Kolkata, the IIM-A team is exploring if the focus could be the management of change and the scope of development of inland water transport. For Mumbai and Kochi, the focus areas, it is further learnt, are yet to be decided. However, Mumbai being an old port and hemmed in by the city, the emphasis could be how to step up the infrastructure and the financing of it in such a situation. The competition from the Jawaharlal Nehru port next door too could be an interesting area to explore. In Kochi, the labour issue is certainly going to be critical. But the emergence of DP World to develop a state-of-the-art container terminal too, it is felt, has thrown up a whole lot of issues relating various aspects of port operations.
