Letters Cola controversy
The tug-of-war between cola companies and the Government seems to be gaining momentum. Some State governments have banned colas and still others are contemplating a similar move. Will the ban affect FDI in India? A sensible decision would be analysis and then proper treatment, rather than a ban. Following the controversy, which first broke out three years ago, the Bureau of Indian Standards came out with standards for cola companies in 2005. Why were they not notified? More than a lakh villages continue to be deprived of safe drinking water in India; they drink contaminated water from wells. What about the deadly pesticides that percolate into these water sources from the soil? And above all, what about the chemical residues from fertilisers and pesticides that are found in vegetables and greens, the latter particularly known to accumulate heavy metals? Will the Government ban the production and sale of those too? Ravi Sharma Letters to the editor and contributions can be sent by e-mail to:bleditor@thehindu.co.in
