The Swarna variety itself can withstand submergence up to seven days. Though both the improved version and the existing variety will give similar yields in normal conditions, the former could yield more (up to two tonnes) than the existing under submergence. Acting quickly on an agency report on the flood-resistant rice variety early this month, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, Minister for Agriculture, spoke to the officials at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines, and secured it. Initially, the Government has decided to go in for small-scale trials in East and West Godavari districts.
