Roadways States - Andhra Pradesh Controversy continues to dog ORR project Our Bureau
It is alleged that the alignment for the project was changed several times to benefit a few well-connected people.
Hyderabad , Aug. 22 The Rs 3,000-crore eight-lane Outer Ring Road (ORR) that seeks to girdle the State capital continues to attract sharp criticism from the Opposition and the displaced people. On Tuesday, hundreds of activists of the Opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Communist Party of India (CPI) conducted a dharna at Indira Park, raising slogans against the alleged irregularities and absence of transparency in acquisition of land for the proposed ring road.
ORR in 2 phases
The 162-km ORR is being taken up in two phases with an aim to decongest growing traffic pressure in the twin cities by connecting various State and National highways. It also aimed at providing faster access to the upcoming international airport at Shamshabad. But the project hit a roadblock, with the opposition parties and the displaced alleging that the alignment for the project was changed several times to benefit a few well-connected people.
`Ensure minimum displacement'
Mr K Narayana, Secretary of CPI's State Unit, told reporters that though his party was not against ORR, it demanded the Government to take measures to ensure minimal displacement of small farmers. Referring to the Government decision to give 10 per cent of the land acquired as compensation, he said it was not agreeable. "They (the displaced) should get plots equivalent to what they lost. Also, they should be given compensation at market value and not at the Government rates," he said. The CPI leader said the Government should discuss with political parties and farmers to evolve a comprehensive policy on land allotment and acquisition.
TDP demand
At a separate dharna, Mr N Chandrababu Naidu and Mr T Devender Goud, senior TDP leaders, came down heavily on the State Government for displacing thousands of the poor and marginal farmers around the State capital in the name of development. Addressing the agitators, they demanded that the Government should compensate the displaced suitably.
