New Delhi , Aug. 22

In an effort to improve connectivity to the State, the Rajasthan Government plans to increase the length of the runway at 13 airports so that airlines would be able to operate larger aircraft, the State Minister for Tourism, Ms Usha Punia, said here on Tuesday.

Liberal hotel policy

Outlining the various initiatives taken by the State Government to promote tourism, the Minister said that the State had recently announced a new hotel policy that would help overcome the shortage of rooms being faced currently.

"The policy will help speed up creation of hotel infrastructure in order to overcome the shortage of rooms that is currently estimated at about 20,000. Besides, it will encourage the involvement of the private sector in developing tourism infrastructure by making land available to the private sector at concessional rates and simplifying procedures," Ms Punia added. The Minister also urged the private sector to take the lead in investing in hotels, especially budget and 1, 2 and 3 stars.

The conference had been jointly organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and Rajasthan Tourism.

Furthermore, the Government has launched an adopt-a-monument scheme to encourage private participation in the maintenance of monuments, the Minister added.
