Around 170 works of noted modern and contemporary Indian artists will go under the hammer at leading auction house Christie's in New York on September 20.

"In the year 2000, we sold paintings by Indian artists for $6,50,000, while in the auction in spring this year, we achieved over $15 million. The upcoming auction, in September, is also expected to cross $15 million in sales", Mr Roddy Ropner, Business Development Director, Asia, Christie's, said.

Though buyers of such works of art are primarily non-resident Indians, more Asians are increasingly getting interested, Mr Hugo Weihe, International Director, Asian Art at Christie's, said.
