Ahmedabad , Aug. 23

Public sector unit Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) has been allotted coal blocks in Korba district of Chhattisgarh and Hazaribagh district in Jharkhand, the company said today.

The Union Ministry of Coal has allotted to GMDC coal blocks with nearly 350 million tonnes of mineable reserves in Morga-II block of Korba district and 100 tonnes of mineable reserves in Jain Nagar, Hazaribagh.

The coal deposits in the Morga block can fuel a 1,000 mw captive power plant while the Jain Nagar coal block can support a 250-MW power plant. Negotiations are on with prospective joint venture partners to set up power stations using indigenous coal.

GMDC also has interests in many minerals like bauxite and manganese and has forayed into power generation.
