IIM-A launches certificate course for armed forces

Our Bureau

Ahmedabad , Aug. 24

Beginning the current academic year, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, is launching a `Certificate Course in Business Administration' for the Officers of the Indian Armed Forces. The programme has been specially designed by IIM-A at the instance of the Directorate-General of Resettlement, Ministry of Defence (DGR-MoD).

The programme aims at providing management education to the officers of the Indian Armed Forces, whether in short commission or regular commission, who are due to retire shortly or have retired recently.

Helping in rehab

The objective of the programme is to help such officers from all the three services - Army, Air Force and Navy— in their rehabilitation in civil life after their retirement. Management training has been identified as the key area based on their preferences.

This will be a six-month, full-time residential programme. The first programme will be conducted on the new campus of IIM-A from October 2, 2006 to March 17, 2007. There will be around 60 participants drawn from three services.

These participants have been selected by the DGR-MoD from amongst the eligible officers. The programme will be broadly divided into three terms. In the first two terms, the participants will be offered about 17 core courses in various functional areas such as economics, marketing, finance, accounting, organisational behaviour, costing, etc.

These courses will be compulsory for all the participants. In the last term, they will be offered elective courses in the specific areas of their interest. In addition to classroom teaching, there would be industrial visits and guest lectures.
