Airlines States - Karnataka Gulf flights from Mangalore in October Our Bureau
Mangalore , Aug. 24 The much-awaited operation of flights from Mangalore to West Asian countries is likely to begin in the first week of October. Addressing members of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Mangalore on Thursday, Mr M.R. Vasudeva, Airport Director, Airports Authority of India (AAI), Mangalore said that the Air India Express is expected to operate flights between Mangalore and Dubai from the first week of October. The Mangalore airport was declared a Customs airport on May 3, 2006. This status will help operate passenger flights to international destinations, he said. To a query, Mr Vasudeva said that the airport should be declared as a customs airport to handle cargo to international destinations. Private players can also take part in cargo handling at the airport, but they will have to apply for the custodianship for handling the cargo, he added. The airport is ready with a second runway that can handle aircraft such as Airbus 320. People from the region, especially those working in West Asian countries, have been urging the Government to operate flights to the Gulf. According to them, a direct flight between Mangalore and West Asia will save them time and money.
