MR S. SIVAKUMAR, Chief Executive Officer of ITC-Agro, addressing students of T.A. Pai Management Institute at Manipal on Friday.
Mangalore , Aug. 25 ITC hopes to cover over one-lakh villages in the country and to create 10 million e-farmers through its eChoupal network by 2010. Addressing the students of T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) under their `CEO Forum Initiative' at Manipal on Friday, Mr S. Sivakumar, Chief Executive Officer of ITC-Agro, said the company's initiative of eChoupal has transformed the way farmers do business. Quoting Mr Sivakumar, a TAPMI release said here that ITC's eChoupal is helping to improve the competitiveness of four million farmers through over 64,000 eChoupal installations covering 38,000 villages in six States.
Aid for farmers
Enabling the farmers to readily access crop-specific real-time information and customised knowledge in their own language, eChoupal improves the farmer's decision making ability thereby helping him to better align his farm output to the projected demand in Indian and international markets. He said that the farmer's ready and easy access to expert knowledge helps him significantly to improve the quality of his crop and the productivity of his land, fetching him much better returns.
Other benefits
The eChoupal network also facilitates the farmer's access to higher quality farm inputs at lower costs. It creates a direct marketing channel, eliminating wasteful intermediation and multiple handling, which reduces transaction costs and improves logistical efficiency, he said. The release said that Mr Sivakumar has conceptualised the eChoupal model and is spearheading its roll out across the country. With a vision to cover 1,00,000 villages by 2010, eChoupal aims to increase incomes and improve the quality of life in rural India while delivering sustainable shareholder value, the release added.
