Railways States - Other States Delhi Metro floats tender for rolling stock supply Our Bureau
New Delhi , Aug. 25 Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has invited bids for supplying rolling stock for its second phase operations, the Managing Director, Dr E. Sreedharan, told Business Line on the sidelines of a seminar on tunnels and underground structures here on Friday. DMRC was in talks with BEML, which has supplied coaches earlier, to work out a long-term agreement for supply of coaches, so that the prices could be pushed down. "But, it didn't work out. Thus, we have floated an international tender," said Dr Sreedharan. The tender is for supply of 400 coaches.
Tunnelling risk
Pointing out that the entire risk of tunnelling projects is passed on to contractors, he said that there is a need to share unforeseen risks with contractors in such projects. He also stressed on the need to bring in safety codes for all types of tunnelling projects. "Fatalities in tunnelling projects (in India) is beyond acceptable limits," he said at the seminar. The seminar was organised by Indian National Group of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering in association with the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways. Dr Sreedharan also stressed on the need to have more specialised courses on tunnelling in IITs and engineering colleges. With several mass rapid transit system (MRTS) projects and rail projects to be taken up in the country, specialised courses on the sector has to be designed so that work can be done without depending on foreign experts, he said.
