Industry status sought for pre-engineered building sector

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Aug. 26

Pre-engineered building (PEB), which is fast emerging as a cost effective and time saving technology, should be given an impetus through an industry status.

It should be supported by codification of standards for materials used in PEB, largely adopted by infrastructure sector.

Speaking at a one-day workshop on `Steel in Construction', Mr V.R. Rajan, Managing Director CEO of Kirby Building Systems (KBS), said the sector was expected to witness a phenomenal growth to touch one million tonnes in next five years from the current 2,000 tonnes.

INDUSTRY INITIATIVE

He said there was need for setting up of adequate testing facilities for the sector and the first one was being sponsored by the Institute for Steel Development and Growth (INDAG), an initiative of the Steel industry.

Mr Rajan said inadequate range of products restricted PEB's faster growth and urged Integrated Steel plants across the country to emulate the example of China which had products sheets of 1,000 varieties and colour coated panels, which could substitute wood or concrete finish.

Mr Sajjan Jindal, President of INDAG, said with the current pace of economic growth the consumption target of 110 million envisaged by the National Steel Policy could be achieved much before the year 2020.

Steel production had been growing at 7.3 per cent during the last decade while the consumption at 6.32 per cent.

Tata ground example

Inaugurating the workshop, the Karnataka Home Minister, Mr M.P. Prakash, urged the industries to emulate the example of the Tata Group, which had come forward to assist in providing funds for 50,000 houses to those below poverty line.

He said there was need for public private partnership in such housing projects as the limit of Rs 25,000 per house fixed by the government would not be adequate. In addition to regular housing programmes, the Government this year planned to construct an additional three lakh houses for the poor, he said.
