Human Resources States - Tamil Nadu `Ability to learn, adapt key qualities for jobs' Our Bureau
PEP-UP: Ms Sunita Lal, Vice-President-HR, Talent PRO, Chennai, addressing students of the SDNB Vaishnav College for Women.
Chennai , Aug. 28 She began with a poser: Do you have the capability to scale up? Will you be able to scale up to the global standards in communication, do you have the ability to learn, ability to adapt and possess leadership qualities? If the answer is yes, the industry will be after you, said Ms Sunita Lal, Vice-President, HR, Talent PRO, Chennai, to the puzzled students of SDNB Vaishnav College for Women, Chromepet, after inaugurating the Business Line Club at the college.
Knowledge back-up
Today's companies have clients from all over the world, she said. Sometimes many people think that they know everything. But, the fact is otherwise. Therefore, one needs to learn a lot. In addition, what is required today is assertive communication, for which one needs to have sufficient back-up of knowledge and information which can be sourced from newspapers and magazines. Therefore, reading newspapers should not be a hobby as many used to say during interviews. It should become a regular habit.
HR interview
She accepted the notion that the HR interview is an elimination round. "Yes, it is the toughest round where we reject more than 40-60 per cent," she said. But, there are reasons. In HR interviews, one doesn't test technical skills. "Rather we test your soft skills which is found to be lacking in many of the present day graduates. It is a sad thing that the students are not willing to invest time to improve these soft skills. Many a times, it is just his/her attitude that fails a candidate in the HR round," she explained. Before concluding she asked the students to ponder over the thought: "What makes me special. What value addition do I have than the other graduates." Ms Lal advised the student community to have some ambition in their career and constantly look for opportunities, work hard, and be focussed to succeed in life and career. This BL Club lecture was attended by more than 800 students besides Dr. T. Sumithra, Principal, faculty members Ms S. Suganthi and Ms Jai Janet Jackson.
