Coonoor tea prices increase

For the second consecutive week, tea auctioneers reported of good business at the auctions conducted by the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) last week.

"This week also, we sold 100 per cent in our catalogue. This was possible because the prices bid were encouraging. Generally prices rose up to Rs 3 a kg, but some invoices saw prices going up Rs 5," an auctioneer told Business Line.

" CTC fannings dearer

Brighter liquoring teas got Rs 3 a kg more. Medium sorts were up by Rs 2. CTC leaf fannings were dearer by Rs 4. Even the plainer sorts fetched Rs 2-3 more. Liquoring bolder brokens got Rs 3 more. BOPF, among the orthodox leaf, was dearer up to Rs 5.

Flavoured teas fetched still higher prices. Lesser high grown teas were up by Rs 4. PDs among the CTC dust grades got Rs 3-4 more. Even the secondary teas among the orthodox dusts got up to Rs 5 more," an auctioneer said.

Among the corporate buyers, Hindustan Lever Ltd bought liquoring teas. JV Gokal and JKF bought orthodox leaf teas. Ananda Bag and Girnar also supported this grade. Madhu Jayanthi competed for BOPF grades. Western Indian buyers and Karnataka dealers were active on the orthodox dust grades.

On the export front, Pakistan was active on the clean, black, smaller brokens and fannings of the CTC leaf grades. The exporters to this market paid up to Rs 51 a kg. Kenya was selective on PDs and paid up to Rs 52. CIS shippers supported the plainer bolder brokens.

The buyer for the Defence establishments supported the plainer teas at around Rs 47 a kg.

Among the CTC teas from bought-leaf factories, Homedale Estate got the highest price of Rs 77.99 a kg, closely followed by Darmona Estate at Rs 77. Highfiled Estate Special got Rs 76.9 and Vigneshwar Estate Rs 75.99.

Quotations held by the brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 42 to 45 a kg for the plain leaf grades and Rs 62 to 68 for the bright liquoring grades. Bids ranged Rs 47 to Rs 48.50 a kg for the plain dust grades and Rs 65-73 for the bright liquoring grades. In effect, the lowest price for the bulk of the teas increased to Rs 45 a kg.
