50,000 tonnes coir pith shipped

Exports rise
Exports of handloom mats, tufted mats, power loom mats, coir fibre, coir pith, rubberised coir and coir geo textiles have increased during the period from April 2005 to March 2006
Experts predict further increase in exports as long as the industry continues to innovate to meet customers in markets such as Europe and the US

Kochi , Aug. 28

During 2005-06 fiscal, coir and coir products export totalled 1,36,207 tonnes, valued at Rs 508.45 crore.

Addressing the 50th AGM, Mr K. Sugunendran, Chairman of the Indian Coir Association, said the figures are clearly indicative that the country is exporting more and more value-added products and if the trend continues export of 1,00,000 tonnes of mats and matting by the year 2010 was within reach.

The unit value has also increased along with the high value of raw materials and higher cost of production.

During the period from April 2005 to March 2006, export of handloom mats, tufted mats, power loom mats, coir fibre, coir pith, rubberised coir and coir geo textiles have shown an increase both in terms of value and quantity.

Items such as handloom matting, power loom matting, coir rugs and carpets, coir rope, and other semi-finished items such as coir yarn has decreased both in terms of quantity and value when compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

Export items

Today, coir pith has become an important export item. Last year, India exported more than 50,000 tonnes of pith fetching about Rs 40 crore to the exchequer. Strenuous efforts are on by the Coir Board for better coir pith utilisation.

`Innovation crucial'

For this, the industry needs to take advantage of the benefits of innovative designs to capture discerning customers in markets such as the US and Europe. There is a need to widen market access by penetrating nascent and new markets. Innovation should be the watchword in all this in order to attain the industry's true potential.

The Association also thanked the State and Central Government for their positive attitude. They pointed out that but for the Union Minister for Small Scale, Agro and Rural Industries, Mr Mahavir Prasad's encouragement, the industry would not have scaled these new heights.

The Association also thanked the State Government for enhancing the budgetary allocation of Rs 55 crore for the development and growth of the Coir Industry and for the promise of enhancing it to Rs 100 crore over the next four years. This will be a step that will greatly enhance the possibilities of the industry, the Association said.
