TN plastics body seeks help to rein in input prices

Chennai , Aug. 29

The Tamil Nadu and Pondy Plastic Association (TANPPA) has called upon the Union Government to help maintain stability in prices of plastic raw materials.

At a press conference here, the association called for elimination of customs duty on plastics, setting up of a regulatory body for the plastic industry, implementation of the Competition Act to check abnormal price hikes and imposition of uniform sales tax on all plastic products.

There are about 8,000 registered plastic products manufacturing units in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Most of them are small or tiny units. About 70 per cent of them have had to close their operations due to vagaries in raw material supplies and prices, the President of TANPPA, Mr G. Sankaran, said.

He noted that the price of plastic raw material had risen from Rs 60 a kg in April 2006 to Rs 95 a kg today. "These raw materials are available in the black market for up to Rs 130 a kg," said Mr Ajay U. Desai, President, All India Plastics Manufacturer's Association.

Other members of the association said that prices had jumped by Rs 13 for a plastic pitcher in a month and soon prices of essentials like shampoo sachets and milk pouches were bound to increase.
