P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Aug. 30

There is a drastic fall in the arrivals of tea at the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) with the catalogue for the 35th sale to take place on Thursday and Friday showing as low a volume as 8.6 lakh kg.

This is some 2 lakh kg less than the volume offered for last week's sale. It is exactly half the volume - 17.2 lakh kg - offered for sale in the corresponding period last year, when, the leaf grades alone totalled 12.8 lakh kg - more than the combined volume of both leaf and dust now.

Previous low

The current volume is the lowest for the last 18 weeks. The previous low was 8.59 lakh kg offered on April 20. Of the 8.6 lakh kg now on offer, as much as 6.07 lakh kg belong to the leaf grades and only 2.53 lakh kg, the dust grades. Again, as much as 7.99 lakh kg belong to the CTC variety and the balance of just 0.61 lakh kg, orthodox variety.

Only 0.23 lakh kg among the leaf grades belong to orthodox while 5.84 lakh kg, CTC.
