Shipping JNPT waits for new chairman to take charge Our Bureau
Mumbai , Aug 30 Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), which handles about 60 per cent of the country's container traffic, has remained headless without a full-fledged chairman for three months and a deputy chairman for 15 months. Ms Rani A. Jadhav, chairperson of the neighbouring Mumbai port, holds temporary charge as JNPT chairperson. Ironically, the two ports are competing with each other for additional cargo. The chairman's post fell vacant after Mr Ravi Budhiraja's retirement on May 31. Ms Neer Saggi's term as Deputy Chairperson ended in May 2005. Moreover, a senior official is holding temporary charge as Chief Manger (Finance) a key position in the JNPT hierarchy. New Delhi has selected Mr Johnny Joseph, commissioner of Mumbai Municipal Corporation, for the chairman's post. But the Maharashtra Government is yet to relieve him, say shipping sources. The port is effectively headless in the midst of a major expansion programme to meet the growing demands of the container trade. The port has called for tenders for a fourth container terminal, work on which could be delayed in the absence of senior executives.
