Education States - Tamil Nadu Stress on pass percentage in colleges decried Our Bureau
ONE FOR FACULTY: Dr B.G. Barki, Director, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research, Chennai, addressing a BL Club meeting in Chennai. Looking on are (from left) Dr K. Maran, HoD-MBA, and Dr. Seetharaman, Principal.
Chennai , Aug. 30 "If a student is not loved at home and at college, then the result will be disastrous. A college's faculty can either make the college or mar the college. We, therefore, need humane teachers," said Dr B.G. Barki, Director, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research, Chennai. He was addressing a two-day national workshop on `Fundamental principles of psychology and counselling for faculty' organised jointly by Sri Sai Ram Engineering College, Arasu Engineering College, Kumbakonam and Dhanalakshmi College of Engineering, Chennai, under the aegis of Business Line Club. Dr Barki came down heavily on those colleges stressing on pass percentages and said companies recruit graduates not because they pass examinations, but for their learning in the classroom. Today, a student need not attend classes to pass an examination as the resources available are plenty. Sitting down in the laboratory a student can download notes from MIT, he said. "A teacher should never get angry. You should always smile. If you cannot get over your anger, you cannot succeed as a teacher," advised Dr Barki. The other speakers of this workshop were Dr J. Charumathi, Prof & Head, Applied Psychology and Behavioural Research, JBAS College for Women, Dr N. R. V. Prabhu, Prof & Head, Department of Management Studies, Valliammal Engineering College, Dr Panch Ramalingam, UGC Academic Staff College, Pondicherry, and Dr Asha Dinesh, MD, Sugam Consultancy.
